The year has only just begun and it’s already solidifying its place as the greatest year in the history of lottery! In the past couple of weeks, we’ve witnessed Powerball’s billion dollar world jackpot record and UK Lotto’s £66 million record. So, will the record lottery winners please stand up?

Scottish Pride – UK Lotto record lottery winners go public; one winner still unknown

Five years after Chris and Colin Weir’s spectacular £161 million EuroMillions win — the UK’s largest lottery win ever — another Scottish couple smashes a lottery jackpot record. David and Carol Martin, from Hawick, took home half of the £66 million UK Lotto record jackpot on 9 January. There must be something extra lucky about lottery players in Scotland.

The Martins did not think they were going to win. In fact, they left the ticket on their mantelpiece unchecked on the night of the draw. A friend visited their house the next day and told them that there were two winners from the draw and urged them to check their numbers. As they enjoyed their breakfast of black pudding and bacon rolls, the Martins checked their numbers and couldn’t believe their eyes. “We must have checked it another ten times or more,” said David Martin.

How will the Martins spend their newly won wealth? The couple, married nearly three decades, said they would like to retire earlier than expected, purchase a home in the countryside, and a second home somewhere warm and sunny. The first thing they actually purchased was a first-class plane ticket to the UK for their daughter who is in Australia.

The other £33 million winner has yet to come forward and claim their prize. Even though the record jackpot was split, the £33 million payouts still set the record for largest individual wins in UK Lotto history.

$1.6 billion Powerball winners go on national television… before any prizes are claimed!

Lottery winners are often in shock after finding out they’ve won a large sum of money. And $528.8 million is certainly a large sum of money! But the behaviour of one of the three $1.6 billion winners have left some people shaking their heads. John and Lisa Robinson of Mumford, Tennessee went on the Today Show to do an interview before they even turned their ticket into the lottery office.

This is strange behaviour indeed and put them at risk of injury and theft — they could have been left with nothing. Thankfully everything went off alright and the ticket was claimed without a hitch. The couple chose the lump sum option, giving them $327.8 million before taxes. When asked why they opted for the lump sum, they said they are “not guaranteed a tomorrow.”

The Robinsons flew back to Nashville after doing their interview in New York and accepted their check in front of a packed press conference on 15 January. They brought their daughter Tiffany and their dog along for the event — the dog fell asleep during the conference, bringing a smile to much of the audience.

The Robinsons plan to pay off their mortgage and their daughter’s student loans, as well as donate to their church and various charities that are close to their heart. They also plan to continue working and when asked why, Lisa Robinson said “why not?”

The owners of the other two winning tickets have not come forward yet. The tickets were sold in California and Florida. The winners have 180 days from the draw in question to claim their winnings. The 13 January Powerball jackpot was the largest jackpot in the history of lottery. The winning numbers were 4, 8, 19, 27, 34 and Powerball 10.
